Anxious Wait In 200 Evler District Of Samsun 22/12/2011

A case was presented about the residents of 200 Evler Neighbourhood, whose slums were demolished and who moved to the building of TOKİ (Mass Housing Foundation), on account of the fact they couldn't pay the taxex of new TOKİ houses. Saim Yarar president of the 200 Evler Association made a press statement after the last trial on behalf of the residents.

The administrator of 200 Evler Association named Saim Yarar, who made a press statement on behalf of the residents after the last trial, said that local authorities want to evict them from the TOKİ houses that they were settled after their old house were demolished in the context of the urban transformation project planned in their neighbourhood. He emphasized they don't accept to be evicted and they will resist against the decisicion through legal means. Most of the residents approved the urban transformation project done in 200 Evler Neighbourhood which was one of the oldest Gypsy settlements of Samsun. However they explained that they had not informed adequately about the conditions of the project and the process of repayment, when they faced difficulty to pay the taxex for the new TOKİ houses.

The situation in 200 Evler Neighbourhood today proves that inaccurate urban transformation projects could create serious problems. Especially the projects which were planned without considering ability of residents to pay the taxes of new houses have risks for city life. If the court confirms the eviction, most of the residents of 200 Evler Neighbourhood will be homeless. A similar situation happened in İstanbul before that Gypsy families who had lived settled for 100 years started travelling after their house were demolished by the municipality.
