Asphalt Paving In Sarıgöl 29/08/2011
A group of Gaziosmanpaşa Municipality officials made asphalt paving in the Sarıgöl neighbourhood of the Gaziosmanpaşa district which is one of the most famous Gypsy settlements of İstanbul. The residents, who tell that there had not been any asphalt paving for almost 28-30 years, are very happy to see that asphalt paving is made in the Kanarya and Dereyolu streets of Sarıgöl.
Roadwork teams related with Gaziosmanpaşa Municipality paved asphalt in Dereyolu street of Sarıgöl on the 19th of August 2011. They continued the roadwork in Kanarya Street on the 24th of August 2011. The residents told that there hadn't been any roadwork for a long time in their neighbourhood and that they were relieved after of the roadwork made in August. The residents emphasize that they hope authorities to do more projects like this in order to improve the living conditions of the residents. If the municipality supported the residents to repair their houses, it is commonly believed by the inhabitants that Sarıgöl could be a model settlement both in Turkey and in Europe.
The Sarıgöl neighbourhood in the District of Gaziosmanpaşa was founded after citizens whose houses were demolished in Beyazıt and Sulukule in the 1950s settled down there. Poverty caused by unemployment is the biggest problem of the residents living in Sarıgöl, out of whom almost 6000 are of Gypsy origin. According to the residents they survive thanks to the solidarity between residents. Because of this survival outside the neighborhood would not be possible, they conclude.
