Gymnasium Became Their Home 08/02/2011

Two Roma family live in a gymnasium which is out of use even the construction was completed long time ago. They maintain the gymnasium and they gatekeep in the gymnasium without getting paid.

The gymnasium which is builded by İstanbul Special Provincial Administration is out of use due to various reasons. Flood disaster existed in 2009, September caused material damage in the gymnasium.

Two Roma family who cleaned the gymnasium after the flood disaster started to live in the gymnasium. The families furnished some rooms of the gymnasium according to their needs. They introduce the importance of their gatekeeping in the gymnasium with these words: "If we are not here, people will steal everything from here."

There are many discussions about the gymnasium in Silivri examining why the gymnasium is still out of use. We believe that there is an other topic to discuss: Housing problem which force people to find unusual solutions as we see in this example.
