İzmir Çetesi Lost Its Way 30/05/2011

In the last episode of a tv series called Izmir Çetesi telecasted on STAR TV showed Roma neighbourhood like a center which aid and beat the criminals. The show that Kadir Inanir, Mustafa Üstündağ and Kadir Ece take part got reactions from the citizens for denigrating gypsy women under cover of humor.

In the last episode of the show which was featured on May,28, 2011 one of the member of the gang was being kidnapped by his gang while his transfer with police van to another prison. After this, gangster comes to one of the well known Roma neighbourhood in Izmir to hide. A family accepts to hide this gangster for money. And a woman from this family speaking with Roma accent sleeps with the gang member. By this Gypsy identities are showed as the ones who aid and beat criminals and Gypsy women were excoriated with prostitution.

In another show called "Öyle Bir Geçer Zaman ki" Gypsies were showed like highjackers and the main male character as hero for busting the Gypsy camp area and beating everybody even the kids. Strengthening the prejudices is accepted as something dangerous by the specialists. Some people who didn't meet any Gypsy person in their lives hear about Gypsy culture from these shows for the first time. It is impossible for these people who learn about gypsies from these shows not to have any prejudices about Gypsies. Gypsies who suffer from these kind of discriminations react very much to such prejudices. Citizens expect Star TV administration to stop hidden racism and not let this happen ever again
