11 Slum Demolished In Kireçocakları 28/11/2011

11 slum in where Roma families lived in Kireçocakları region of Tavşantepe neighbourhood were demolished by İzmit district municipality officials. There was a great tension between slum owners and municipality officials in the eviction which started when the residents carried their furnitures outside. Families whose slums demolished hope authorities to show them new houses.

The families who lived in the area for a long time explain that demolishing of their slums in winter make everything harder for them. They hope the authorities to suggest them alternate housing possibilities. Residents evaluating the issue claim that the biggest problem about the demolishing is that there was not enough dialogue between slum owners and planners of the eviction.

Urban transformation projects, which are planned without communicating with the people who will be influenced by the project , could make difficulties. Some urban transformation projects done in Istanbul before caused Roma families who lived settled for a long time to start travelling again. These families living under hard circumstances without any formal recognition show that what kind of damages could be created by the wrong urban transformation projects.
