Siviliz Made An Interview With Dom Association 28/07/2011
The bulletin named "Siviliz" published by Sivil Society Development Center (STGM) made an interview with Mustafa Karabulut, the president of board of management of Hatay Dom Tribe's Culture Research, Development Social Solidarity and Cooperation Association. Karabulut explained unknown realities about Dom Gypsies' life in the interview.
President of the Dom Association Mustafa Karabulut explains cultural features of Dom society and problems they face in the interview published in Siviliz (April 2011). Karabulut says Dom people mostly live in eastern and south-eastern Anatolia in Turkey. Traditional occupations of Dom people were blacksmithing, jewellery and dentistry according to him. However, they started to subsist on casual works and scrap collecting after industrialization made invalid their traditional jobs. Karabulut underlines that their mother tongue Domari is still alive and being used by Dom people for internal communications.
Mustafa Karabulut explains problems they face from past to present with these words: "Dom society were producing cultivators in fields of villagers. Dom society were mading dental plates and jewels of their clients in their clients' houses. We brought services to our clients. We started to settle and entegrate settled society even in some cases forgot our languages since 1970's. These days, i only remember poverty if you ask about meaning of being Dom. Dom society, who were accepted as a craftsmen society before, are being targeted by prejudices and face discrimination." Karabulut says that they will continue to struggle against prejudices targeting Dom people.
