Tent Fire In Ümraniye 18/04/2011

A fire broke out in the tents in Yukarı Dudulu Neighbourhood of Ümraniye district of İstanbul in 2011 April 14th. The fire damaged furnitures, tent of Arakara family and a car which is used to collect scrap and paper by the family. Fortunately, there were no one who lost its life or injured in the incident. However, dogs kept by the family burnt to death.

Arakara family who lived in a shanty in Alemdağ Nişantepe came to Ümraniye a few years ago and started to live in a tent there. There are too many families living there in tents without infrastructure services. These families living in tents in Alemdağ, Ümraniye, Ataşehir, Küçükbakkalköy with Roma and Abdal origin come into question with the fire incident. Local authorities say that the fire was caused by electrical failure. However the residents claim that the fire could be started by some individuals who nurture enmity towards Arakara family.

The Arakara family with 4 children who lost everything in the fire hopes authorities to help them. All the families living in the tents are waiting for a quick solution for housing problem.
