Yalova Gypsies Marched Against Ban Of Paper Collecting 17/10/2011

The decision of Yalova municipality to ban storing of collected papers in the city center due to the claim that it creates environmental pollution resulted in huge reactions from Roma Gypsies living in Yalova that make their living on paper collecting. They marched to the municipality building and explained their demands to deputy mayor Hikmet Yavuz.

The citizens spoke to the municipality officers that hinder them to store collected papers, and underlined that paper collecting is the only way for them to make their living, and that they have to store the collected papers because they have no possibility of transporting them. The municipality officials told that some citizens complained about the places where collected papers are stored and further said that they made the decision through considering the complaints. The protestors returned to their neighbourhoods in silence after the municipality officials said they would find a solution for their situation soon.

Paper and scrap collecting is one of the most common jobs practiced by various Gypsy groups of Turkey. The citizens that were obligated to make their living on paper and scrap collecting after their traditional jobs disappeared struggle to survive under hard circumstances.
